Started in 2022 by artist and educator Clay Dunklin, DesignLAB is an art and design club that provides opportunities for young people to collaborate with professional artists and designers on real-world projects for real clients. In the winter of 2022, students in the REBOUND high school program at the Salem Kroc Community Center in Salem, OR joined three professional designers in creating an exclusive set of hoodies to distribute for free to unsheltered youth in the Salem area. Archie Vasquez, Maria Ortega Osorno, and Clay Dunklin each brought their unique perspectives and aesthetics to three different designs printed on hoodies exclusively for this project. REBOUND students competed to have their hoodie printed as the fourth and final design for distribution with Moxie Riot being chosen as the winner! During this project, students learned about the design process, collaboration, and designing for good. DesignLAB and REBOUND students volunteered and partnered with HOST, HOME, and Backbone through Northwest Human Services to distribute the hoodies to unsheltered youth around Salem in the Fall of 2023.
